Castle Sonnenburg

Sonnenburg, interesting 11th century cryt, prehistoric findings. The Sonnenburg casale, an ancient Benedictine monastery with Church of San Giovanni, the aristocratic Hebenstreit residence and the court house, together represent one of the oldest villages in Alto Adige. Surrounded by the extraordinary nature of Val Pusteria, the characteristic town of San Lorenzo is situated 810m high at the foot of Plan de Corones and the entrance to Alta Badia a fantastic world for lovers of winter sports and naturalistic excursions, a paradise for children, for gourmets and simply for all those who appreciate unmistakable environment and natural cordiality that welcomes guests to the historic Sunapurc. Almost a thousand years ago, Volkhold inherited the Sunapurc from his father, Count Otwin. As he had lost interest in secular wealth, he transformed the castle into a monastery and chose a recluse/hermit lifestyle, transferring all his property to the monastery which developed into a convent for aristocratic ladies. A lot of legends and events are weaved around the Badesse (Abbesses) period of domination: from divine judgement against the presumed modesty to obstinate confrontation with Cardinal Cusanus, from fires and plundering to court life. With splendid views over the fascinating surroundings, each of the 43 bedrooms also tells a different story, such as the princess's room which boasts rare 1770 frescoes on the ceiling. Allow yourselves to be transported by curiosity through the historical trails…discovering quiet areas and the vital spirit of Sonnenburg that lets you forget everyday life as soon as you cross the luxuriant fragrant courtyard, the magnificent Gothic-style corridor with its imposing groin-vaulted spans or the ancient gardens of the nuns with medicinal plants, replanted with loving care Everybody will find their own Schloss Sonnenburg” in this magic place.
