About Gsteier Hut
The ancient Gsteier hut above Merano – currently closed- had two separate buildings at the time: the Außen- and Hintergsteier. The Mais di Rio di Nova cooperative used to own both, having bought them in 1910. It decided to unite them in one single structure, as the owner decided to not only grow produce on the land, but to open the Gsteier as a local eatery, known as "Buschenschank". In1980 the cooperative decided to give the building to the province of Bolzano who put it up for sale in 2001.
On 5 February 2002 the Mair Family, from the Hohenwart Hotel in Scena, decided to buy it. 6.5 hectares of land belong to the property and are used to rear sheep and farm organic food, both for personal use and for the hotel and restaurant. Gsteier is an ideal reference point for those coming back from a hike on the Via Alta of the Taser, passing by the Ivigna hut or coming from Falzeben. Even seasoned bikers will be able to stop at our hut during the demanding ride to Gsteier.
Selection of the menu
- Lamb specialities (lamb ham, smoked lamb sausage, lamb cheese and potatoes)
- Lamb ragout with dumplings
- Herb-roasted lamb chops with side dishes
- Roast lamb ("Schöpsernes") with rice
