Inbetween a manifold culture, rich history and beautiful landscapes in the unspoiled nature of South Tyrol.
A place, like a picture book: In the middle of the nature park Fanes-Sennes-Braies and the nature park Drei Zinnen, situated at the entrance of the wildly romantic Höhlensteintal, is the dreamy village of Dobbiaco, which attracts culture and nature lovers with its treasures to the Alta Pusteria Valley: In the historical centre of the village stands the splendid baroque parish church, built on the foundations of a Romanesque church in 1764. The tour continues to the Herbstenburg, a medieval fortress tower that was located in the centre of a fortification, where the Court of Justice was also housed for a while. From 1508 to 1511 it was used by Emperor Maximilian I, Archduke of Habsburg, as a quarter in the war against Venice. The castle was connected by an underground passageway to the Red Tower built in 1430, which became the property of the barons of Winkelhofen in 1580.
At the end of the 19th century, Dobbiaco experienced a great economic upswing due to the flourishing tourism; through the associated construction of the southern runway, which led from Lienz to Franzenfeste, tourism came increasingly into the country. Witness of this period is the grand Grand Hotel, which was considered to be the meeting point of the high and high nobility. After its use as a hospital during the First World War, the rooms stood empty for a long time, but today they shine again in their former splendour and house, among other things, the well-known cultural and convention centre, the heart of which is the Gustav-Mahler-Saal. It was named after the Austrian composer, who spent his summers in the picturesque village between 1908 and 1910 and was inspired to some of his works in his composer's cottage in the nature park of Dobbiaco. The Gustav Mahler Music Weeks are held in his honour every year.
Dobbiaco's Water Worlds
The crystal-clear lake of Dobbiaco, one of the few remaining wetlands of South Tyrol, shimmers in the blue-green of the picturesque landscape of the nature park and seduces you on warm summer days to swim in its cool water or to relax on a boat trip or to meet in the winter for curling and ice-skating. Along the nature trail you can learn some interesting things about its flora, fauna and geomorphology. Another lake, Lake Dürrensee, awaits you to share the magnificent view of the Cristallo Group with you. Worth mentioning are also the ZweiWasserBrunnen, a drinking water well on the edge of Dobbiaco and the Drava river, which runs 750 km through 5 European countries and finally flows into the Danube.
Popular leisure activities in spring and summer can be found along the numerous hiking, mountain bike and climbing trails to explore the Dolomites, especially the Three Peaks. The winter, on the other hand, attracts passionate cross-country skiers as well as ski tourers, skiers and snowboarders to discover the dreamlike landscapes covered in white.
