About Auer
Dreamy and surrounded by noble, fruity vines, this idyllic village is situated in the South Tyrolean lowlands. Known as one of the warmest places in South Tyrol, it is the gateway to the south.
The idyllic village of Auer is not far from the beautiful Lake Caldaro. A view into the authentic village centre is enough to be enchanted from the very first moment by its rural character and the charming, picturesque lanes. Let us take you from the history of the place back to the Stone Age and tell you about the remaining medieval domains of past times. In the southern part of the village stands the oldest building of the village: St. Peter's Church, built in the 11th century, which is now 5 metres deeper than the surrounding buildings due to the numerous floods and the associated earth deposits. As this former parish church was often inaccessible due to the mudflows of the Adige floods, the Marienkirche was built in 1674 as Auers secondary church in the historical village centre.
Around Auer you can enjoy numerous cultural and sporting activities. Above the village lies the popular excursion destination "Castelfeder": once a prehistoric, roman and early medieval settlement; today a biotope flooded with sunshine, barren and swamped by grass, oaks, ponds and swamps. Follow the traces of history and discover Castelfeder's landmark - the remains of an impressive byzantine wall from 500 AD, the so-called "Kuchelen". The journey continues through history to the ruins of the barbarian chapel from the 6th century and a more curious sight, the fertility slide. This flat, smooth stone slide is a symbol of an ancient fertility cult. From this 190 m high hill made of prophylaxis stone you can enjoy a wide view over the South Tyrolean lowland, which invites you to linger and enjoy a wonderful view from the Kalterer See, Branzoll and Neumarkt to Salurn.
The surrounding area is also one of the most popular hiking and biking regions. Where until 1963 the Fleimstaler Bahn ran along the railway line, there is now a cycle path that leads along the former railway line from Neumarkt via San Lugano to the Val di Fiemme in Trentino. The nearby Trudner Horn Nature Park awaits passionate hikers.
