About the Dolomites
The Dolomites, a mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps, spread over the Veneto and Trentino-South Tyrol regions, have been part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site Dolomites since 2009 and are a very popular destination for hikers, climbers, mountain bikers and skiers.
The "Bleaching Mountains", as the Dolomites are also called, are presented with bizarre rock formations and impressive, steep walls that shimmer at sunset in a reddish light and make the mountains appear almost unreal.
The Dolomites are spread over the provinces of South Tyrol, Trentino and Belluno. Since 2009, parts of this mountain range of the Southern Limestone Alps have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites, due to their beauty and unique geology, which allows a view into different phases of the earth's history. Characteristic for this group of mountains is the abrupt change between gentle alpine pastures and rugged, up to more than 3,000 meters high limestone and dolomite reefs.
The best-known massif includes the Geisler and Puez Group, the Schlern, the Rosengarten, the Latemar Group, the Braies and Sesto Dolomites with the famous Three Peaks, Sella Group and Sassolungo. The Marmolata is the highest mountain in the Dolomites with a height of 3,342 metres.
The Dolomites region is an extremely popular destination for outdoor enthusiasts, nature lovers, hikers, climbers, mountain bikers and skiers. The mountain range can be traversed on ten exciting Dolomite mountain trails. Winter sports enthusiasts in particular will get their money's worth in Val Gardena. In 1974, twelve ski resorts joined together to form the Dolomiti Superski network, which comprises 460 ski lifts and more than 1,200 kilometres of pistes that can be used with a single ski pass. The famous Sellaronda and the nearby Gardena Ronda form the heart of the lift network.
