About the event
The importance of trees in cities will be discussed on April 10th from 6:00 PM at the South Tyrol Museum of Natural Sciences. This event is part of the series “Stare a galla – Agriculture and Society” organized by the Regional History Center, the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Free University of Bolzano, Storia e Regione, and the Association of Ethnologists of South Tyrol. The event will be in Italian. Free entry.
Ecologist Mauro Tomasi from Merano will explain the necessity of considering trees as allies for environmental sustainability and the natural enhancement of urban areas. He will highlight the advantages offered by tree greenery, as well as the difficulties trees face in the urban context. One should not expect the impossible from trees; to preserve them for the long term, proper planning and care are essential. Only with professional and respectful management can they perform their functions.
Argante Brancalion, Reinhard Dallinger, and Klaus Griesser from the "Rinverdire Bolzano" working group within the Environment and Health association will talk about the Regreen Rentsch initiative, a project to transform the area around Premstaller Hof into an urban green space. Trees, lawns, gardens, water areas, and green roofs and walls could lower the temperature, clean the air, and mitigate the effects of heavy rain. Climate change is already very evident in this part of the city: in the summer of 2023, temperatures near Premstaller Hof reached up to 51 degrees.
Mirco Massetti, coordinator of the Nissà Semi-Rural Garden in Bolzano, will also speak. This is the city’s first intercultural community garden project. Established in 2010 by the Nissà Frauen Association on an unused urban plot between the Don Bosco and Europa-Novacella neighborhoods, the project involves around 80 people of different origins, genders, ages, and cultural backgrounds working together. By sharing experiences and interacting with the local community, they expand their knowledge of gardening, vegetable and herb diversity, and lifestyle choices.
