About the event

The exhibition contrasts two monumental construction projects

The exhibition contrasts two monumental construction projects: the historic Franzensfeste Fortress (1833–1839) and the ongoing construction of the Brenner Base Tunnel – one of Europe’s largest underground infrastructure projects.

Tyrolean photographer Gregor Sailer captured Europe’s largest current underground tunnel construction project using a large-format analog camera – far from public view, deep below ground and above it.
Through his artistic and photographic exploration, he seeks to reveal landscapes shaped by human and mechanical forces, and to make newly created architectures visible. His work opens access to a world that remains largely hidden from the public eye.

In dialogue with Sailer’s photographs, the exhibition also presents another narrative: the historical construction site of the Franzensfeste Fortress. Here, the focus lies on the social history of the 19th century and the traces left by the project in the region.
