Two lovers, separated by distance, can communicate only in secret. For years, Clara and Robert Schumann struggled to obtain Clara’s father’s consent to their marriage. Between 1838 and 1840, they exchanged countless letters, writing to each other almost every day. Even in their piano compositions, the engaged couple referred to one another in highly subtle musical ways, sending secret messages of love through their music.



In Catalina Butcaru’s concert project Voice from Afar, the audience becomes a witness to the love between Clara and Robert Schumann. Music takes center stage, just as it did in the lives of the two artists, who were constantly playing the piano and composing. At the same time, the literary component is given considerable attention. The performance is filled with many wonderful and little-known details, ensuring that even devoted connoisseurs of piano music and classical music will find much to enjoy.
