Gassenhauertrio: Andrea Götsch, Clarinet/Jakob Mitterer, Cello/Nika Afazel, Piano

With Andrea Götsch (clarinetist with the Vienna Philharmonic), Jakob Mitterer (cellist with the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra), and Nika Afazel (freelance pianist and accompanist), three internationally established names in the emerging music scene come to Toblach. Together, they form the Trio Meran Teheran, which bears the birthplaces of the three musicians in its name.
The program includes two undisputed masterpieces for this ensemble: the clarinet trios by Beethoven and Brahms. Almost a hundred years separate the creation of the lively trio by the young Ludwig van Beethoven ("Gassenhauer Trio," 1797) and the weighty Trio op. 114 by the already 57-year-old Brahms, who discovered his love for the clarinet later in life. Both works are committed to "classical" formal principles, but are so different in their composition and effect. While Beethoven's trio is a "throw," where virtuoso playfulness is prominent, Brahms' mature work displays compositional depth and interconnectedness in all conceivable facets.
Robert Muczynski, the son of Polish and Slovak immigrants, can rightfully be considered one of the most significant neoclassical composers in post-war America. His work references classical form language, is influenced by Bartók, Bernstein, and Barber, and also incorporates harmonies and rhythms from jazz.
