About Latemar

The Latemar not only surprises with its imposing cliffs in a romantic setting, but also impresses with fossils of ancient times between fossilized coral reefs and traces of volcanic activity. Steep rocks made of limestone in combination with gentle and peaceful mountain meadows are the scenic trademark of the Latemar.

Like the rose garden, this mountain range belongs to the UNESCO World Natural Heritage of the Dolomites and is located in the Eggental, on the border between South Tyrol and Trentino. Let's take a quick trip back in time, as Latemar's geology has always fascinated explorers: its distinctive feature is the strong, layered structure of the rocks that over time has undergone various floods as well as magmatic disruption of the rocks , Its marine origins make it possible to find fossils of shells and ammonites - findings suggesting that this was once a reef-enclosed lagoon. But anyone who thinks that it ends here with the curiosities, is mistaken, because in Latemar are also traces of past volcanic activity: Inside the main ridge of the mountain, at a depth of 200 meters, one encounters dark lava rock.

As the lava used to permeate the mountains completely over numerous Magmagänge, this type of rock is mainly found at the bottom of ravines, gullies and niches.

Back to the now. The horseshoe-shaped area is a popular destination for numerous excursions for sportsmen and nature lovers: The most beautiful view is from the Karerpass, because here, surrounded by the beautiful nature, the Latemar admires its place in the crystal-clear, blue-green waters of the legendary Karersee. While there are countless hiking trails in spring, summer and autumn to explore the area on foot, on a mountain bike or on horseback, the heart of winter enthusiasts in the "best ski resort in the Alps" really gets going: prepared for skiing or snowboarding, you can look forward to racy descents in the ski resort Carezza Ski as well as in the ski center Latemar.

Those who call for adventure to climb the peaks of the Latemar group will find their challenge along exciting via ferratas: from the 2,560 m high Gamsstallscharte, the 2,460 m high Poppekanzel and the 2,402 m high Torre dei Muss in the north to the 2,358 m high Monte Agnello in the south. The highest peak of the mountain colossus is the Diamantiditurm (2,842 m), which can only be reached via the Campanili del Latemar via ferrata.
