The nature reserve is famous for its numerous rock formations which are typical of the Dolomites. The porphyritic platform, the Werfen layers, calcareous rocks, the Schiliar dolomite, the Dachstein dolomite and the Arenaria stone of the Gardena Valley are among the most important ones. On one side the nature reserve is situated at the foot of the Odle mountain range (Sass Rigais, Furchetta), which are over 3,000 m high. On the other side it faces the Puez Plateau (Sassongher and Stevia with the Col de la Pieres 2,759 m).
