San Procolo Church
San Procolo is one of the most ancient churches in Alto Adige. At the time of its construction in the first half of the VII century, it was a little Germanic church made of wood. It is located at the entrance of the village of Naturno and it is surrounded by apple trees. This little church is very humble: a sturdy tower with arched windows leaning against a square structure made of rock.
The impressive characteristic of this church is the frescos on the external wall and inside the church. At the end of the XIV century the entire interior was decorated with frescos, while the external wall facing south was painted. In 1923 works brought to light the most ancient frescos of the entire German-speaking area. The most famous of all coloured representations is the so called "Schaukler", which is very likely to be a depiction of San Procolo, once the bishop of Verona.
This church is a masterpiece of art in the region and, at the same time, a historical witness dating back to 1500 years ago.
