St Verena church

The St Verena church in Rotwand is situated on the Ritten plateau, in attractive and scenic surroundings.
The St Verena church is more like a chapel and has no significant art-historical features. The church is a simple and straight-lined construction from the 13th century, first documented in 1256. However, the brief ascent to this church is definitely to be recommended as its location is a scenic highlight of the Ritten plateau. The church's exposed yet protected position makes it likely that the hill had already been used for ritual purposes in Celtic times.

The church cuts a lonely figure on the highest point of a cone ground down by ice-age glaciers, high above Valle Isarco (Eisacktal). There is no road leading up, just a hiking trail called Eisacktaler Keschtnweg which zigzags upward across the barren hill. From here, the view extends far and wide over the valley and to the craggy peaks of the Dolomites.
