Von Gelmini estate
Von Gelmini estate in Salorno. The estate was built in the early 17th century. It originally belonged to the An der Lans, then the Fedrigottis and, finally, to the von Gelmini family. The 3-storey building with garden and courtyards connecting the annexes has a façade on Via Schiller with polygonal oriel with tower and oeil-de-boeuf windows in the upper part. The building is decorated with a mosaic of the Virgin and Child (1911), which takes inspiration from the Renaissance masterpiece by Raphael. The interior of the room with the oriel (1661) has a marvelous coffered ceiling and finely carved wooden walls divided into two sections marked by elegant pilasters. Dr. Max von Gelmini was one of the most important silkworm farmers of South Tyrol. He built the “silk mill”, one of the most important examples of industrial architecture in the whole province.
