E-Bike Transalp: In six stages from Füssen to Riva del Garda - Description

Long distance mountain bike route in six stages from Füssen to Riva del Garda. Riding technique moderate, riders should have good physical condition,
On this alpine crossing from Füssen to Lake Garda we ride a long way on the old Roman road Via Claudia Augusta. We reach Austria over the Fernpass, conquer the Reschenpass, cycle through the Vinschgau Valley and reach the Etsch Valley over the Gampen Pass. We cycle through the wine growing areas of South Tyrol and reach Lake Garda via the Brenta Group to Riva. On the tour we get flowing trails, cart tracks, fine gravel and wonderful pass roads under the tires - in other words, everything a keen mountain biker desires. The route is well-balanced but demanding in terms of riding technique and leads us over the main ridge of the Alps to Lake Garda, the most popular destination for crossing the Alps by bike.

    Tegelbergbahn valley station in Füssen

Stage 1: From the Tegelbergbahn near Füssen over the Fernpass to Nassereith
We start our tour at the valley station of the Tegelbergbahn near Füssen and head south towards Neuschwanstein Castle. In Hohenschwangau we reach the Alpseestraße, leave it to the left shortly before the lake and cycle past the Jägerhaus towards the castle. Now we cycle to the Bleckenau mountain inn and then keep going towards the hunter's lodge. From the hut the Schützensteig begins, a fantastic trail that will let the adrenaline rush into our veins. After the trail pleasure we will reach a gravel path which will lead us to the doors of the Hotel Ammerwald. Here we now take the valley road to the right and soon spot the shore of the Plansee. At the Hotel Forelle we turn left, cycle along the shore shortly afterwards, enter the forest and keep going towards Griesen. We soon reach the cycle path in the direction of Ehrwald. At the traffic circle at the end of Ehrwald we cycle left uphill, keep right at the following fork and cycle uphill on a forest and meadow path. At the next fork in the road, turn right again towards Biberwier. We ignore the following two forks and then turn left towards "Weissensee, Mittersee". The path soon turns into a gravel path, we turn left towards the Fernpass lakes and leave the gravel path immediately. We now continue on a forest and meadow path in the direction of the Fernpass lakes. Soon we reach the road, but before that we turn left onto a forest and meadow path and keep left at the next path junction. After reaching the Fernpass road, our route leads into a gravel path and we follow this until we reach the Fernpass road, turn right for about 60 m and leave it again on a gravel path. On the cycle path we keep sharp left at first and turn left again after about 350 m in the direction of "Nessereith, Fernstein". The path soon turns into a wonderful path before we reach the campground and continue on asphalt. We soon reach the main road, cross it and follow a gravel path parallel to the road to St. Wendelin. Here we cycle on the road to Nassereith and follow it through the village. From Nassereith we follow the signs "Via Claudia" until Imst and finally reach our destination.
Stage 2: From Nasserreith on old Roman roads to Nauders
In Imst we follow the signs "Inntalradweg" in the direction of Zams. We cycle through Zams and follow the cycle path along the Inn. Via Landeck we follow the signs "Via Claudia" and reach the village of Urgen. In Urgen we keep in the direction of Hochgallmig, cycle uphill and then follow the signs "Schön Aussicht". From the "Schön Aussicht" we follow the signs towards Fiss and then turn onto the trail "Mk3 Fiss Herrenweg". In Fiss we now follow the signs of the old Roman road again. On the cycle path we cycle through Servaus, then we continue to St. Zeno and from there to Tschupbach. Here we reach the path "MK 15", then we cycle on the cycle path Via Claudia and arrive in Pfunds. From here we cycle towards the Kajetansbrücke. We follow the asphalt road to the village of Martina, passing Altfinstermünz and the tiny village of Vinadi. From Martina we cycle to our destination Nauders and look for our accommodation for the night.
Stage 3: From Nauders through the Vinschgau Valley to Cermes
In Nauders we orientate ourselves towards Riatsch. On the gravel road we continue towards the Grüner See. Before the lake we turn left on the trail that leads us up to the lake. We push our bikes up to the high voltage pylon, then we cycle along a meadow path and turn left at the next fork towards Reschen Alm. We rest at the alpine pasture and then cycle straight on until we reach an asphalt road, turn left and at the next fork turn left towards St. Valentin. We then follow the cycle path signs to Burgeis and cycle along the banks of the Reschen and Haider lakes. Now we cycle on cycle paths and side roads through the villages Schleis, Laatsch and Glurns. We are now in the middle of the Vinschgau Valley and cycle along the cycle path to Prad on the Stilfserjoch. The route now mainly follows cycle paths along the banks of the Adige to Laas, then on to Covelano and from here along the edge of the forest to Tarsch. Via Tschars we reach Naturns and orientate ourselves on the railroad line until shortly before Algund. Now we follow the signs to Meran and make a short detour to the spa town. In Merano we cycle to the horse race course and reach Marling. Now we follow the signs in the direction of Tscherms and finally reach our stage destination.
Stage 4: From Cermes over the Mendel Pass to Tramin
In Cermes we follow the signs in direction Gampenpass. Now we drive steadily on the pass road until we reach the top of the pass and screw our way up to a height of 1500 m. We stay on the road until we reach the hamlet Unsere Liebe Frau Im Walde, finally leaving it to enter the hamlet and now we cycle via St. Christoph to St. Felix. Here we reach the pass road again, but now we cycle in the opposite direction, i.e. back up towards the pass summit. Before the big valley bridge we turn right and cycle on towards the Felixer Weiher. We reach an inn, cross a small bridge and follow the path to the pond until we cycle on a beautiful forest and meadow path to the right around the water. Soon we follow the signposting 511, cycle on an old goods road steeply uphill and turn left at the coming fork towards Fondo Alm. We now stay on the main path and reach the summit of the Gantkofel. Now the trail to Passo Mendola follows. We now follow the red and white markings which show us the way along wonderful trails. We soon reach a dirt road towards Passo Mendola (Mendola Pass) and continue to follow the red and white markings. At Hotel Paradiso we reach the Mendola Pass road, which we follow to the top of the pass. From the pass, we descend through many serpentines in the direction of Bolzano until we turn right at an altitude of 700 m in the direction of Kaltern. From Kaltern we now follow the signs in the direction of Tramin, reach our stage destination and end our day with a glass of Gewürztraminer.
Stage 5: From Tramin through the Adige Valley to Molveno
From Tramin we cycle in the direction of "Auer/Neumarkt", cross the Adige river and now cycle along the cycle path along the Adige to Masetto. On this way we pass through the fruit and wine plantations of the Adige Valley and get a whiff of Mediterranean air for the first time. Now we cross the Adige and cycle to Mezzocorona. We pass through the village and keep going towards Mezzolombardo. Now we follow the road along the dam, soon we pass through the tunnel and then turn left towards Maso Milano. We follow the asphalt road through the village, then we get onto a gravel road and reach the village square of Maurina. Now we follow the signs for Spormaggiore. On the Via dei Molini in Spormaggiore, we continue until the next fork, turn right and arrive at a dirt road after crossing the bridge. After 2.4 km we leave the road to the left towards Selvaplana and follow the main road until we reach Andalo. Once in the village, at the fork in the road at the Hotel Negresco, turn left, then right at the next crossroads and leave the road in the direction of "Rifugio Tosa Pedrotti, Rifugio Selvata". Then we turn towards "Rifugi del Brenta", reach a parking lot and turn left towards Molveno, our stage destination.
Stage 6: From Molveno through the Val di Lomasone to Riva del Garda
In Molveno we turn right onto the main road and follow it until the turn-off to Lido. Then we cycle along the lake until we reach the main road. We follow this road until we reach Villa Banale. In the village we turn right in the direction of Campo Lomaso and then continue to Vigo Lomaso. Here we turn right, cycle to Dasindo and enter the secluded Val di Lomasone, where beautiful gravel roads and beautiful forest and meadow paths await us once again. At the end of the valley we leave the asphalt road and turn left onto a fantastic trail that leads us to the road towards Tenno. However, we turn left and roll down to Piazze. From here we take side roads to Riva del Garda. We roll to the harbour and finish our crossing of the Alps with a cappuccino at the harbour.
