Historical Tour from Bressanone/Brixen to Fortezza|Franzensfeste - Description

An interesting themed tour of the history and region of the Eisacktal Valley. This route leads from Bressanone near the motorway to Varna, past the Vahrner See lake, to the upper fortress and on to Fortezza. There are a total of 24 information boards, with themes ranging from art and history to nature and geology. You can learn e.g. that the Rienz river once flowed through Riggertal Valley, as well as interesting facts about the Brennerbahn railway.

    Bressanone|Brixen, old Heilig-Geist-Spital hospital (559m)

    This well-signed historical tour starts in Bressanone (559m) at the old Heilig-Geist-Spital hospital. This historical building in the Großen Graben road is used as a retirement home today. Via Stadelgasse, Weißlahnstraße, Hauptstraße underpass and Dantestraße street, you will reach the hospital. There, trail no. 2 ascends left to the underpass of the motorway and railway and on to Neuhäuslhof farm. Ascending further through the forest, you will rich the settlement of Varna (671m). From Kastaniensiedlung settlement, trail no. 1 continues northward to Vahrner See lake (678m, rest stop). Route no. 3B then ascends, winding through the forest to the upper fortress (840m, board no. 21). After your visit continue on the Eisacktal Valley  Bike Path (Eisacktaler Radweg) to Fortezza (749m). There, you will find useful information on the bunker constructions. This themed tour ends at the “Römerstraße” Romand street, where you can still see the grooves of the carts, which traveled in this region 2,000 years ago. You can take the train or local bus back to Bressanone.
