Königswiese mountain at the Trudner Horn Nature Park - Description

Here in the extreme south you can explore one of the quietest yet most diverse corners of South Tyrol. The land features shady forests and unexpected views. This fairly long tour is suitable for families who love hiking and learning, and is a great way to get to know the flora and fauna of the Trudner Horn Nature Park.
This hike features steep passages, some on forestry trails, some on remote trails. The route – winds up through the forest and leads to a sparsely populated and unexpectedly pristine forest landscape. The park was named after the Trudner Horn, a modest mountain with a height of 1,781 m. It’s the lowest and southernmost nature park in South Tyrol and is situated between the Fleimstal, Etschtal and Cembratal valleys and covers 7,000 hectares in the municipalities of Anterivo/Altrei, Montagna/Montan, Egna/Neumarkt, Salurno/Salurn and Trodena/Truden, from where it’s worth a trip to the nature park visitor centre. Getting here is not exactly easy, but the rewards are beautiful views, a great variety of trails, and countless possibilities to observe nature.

Directions

  • Start

    Casignano/Gschnon, Kalkofen car park

Montagna/Montan or Fontanefredde/Kaltenbrunn are both gateways to the starting point of this tour. Starting at the information board located at the Kalkofen car park, follow the trail markers, first ascending via comfortable switchbacks on a forestry road. Then follow the ascending trail toward Großwiese mountain. Head west from here past rock walls until the trail zigzags steeply uphill. Continue once again on a forestry road (“Oberer Königswiesweg”) ascending via broad, nearly level switchbacks toward Solda/Sulden. An ascending trail heading off to the right leads to the Königswiese mountain peak in 10 minutes. The return is initially on the same trail and forestry road as far as the signpost for Cauria/Gfrill. Carry on as far as the valley floor and another junction. Take a sharp left, uphill to the Gfriller Sattel saddle which is soon reached. Continue straight on as far as the forestry road on which you started. This leads back to the car park.
