The name is mentioned for the first time in writing - this probably indicates the numerous floods, in which the river Ahr, which crosses the banks of the river Ahr, repeatedly ravaged the surrounding valley floor in the past - in the Traditional Book of Bressanone from the year 1060. Together with the main town of the same name, the municipality of Sand in Taufers today comprises the municipalities Mühlen in Taufers, Rein in Taufers, Kematen and Ahornach. 
On a mountain ledge at the entrance of the narrow Ahrntal valley, which can be seen from a distance, the castle of Taufers stands proudly enthroned, commissioned in the 13th century by the noble masters "ze Tauvers" and extended and rebuilt several times in the course of time.
