About the Antholzertal
A winter sport has made the Antholzertal well known far beyond the borders of South Tyrol: the biathlon. Of course, the remote, rustic mountain valley has much more to offer than "just" winter sports.
Ever since international biathlon championships took place in Central and Northern Europe, millions of enthusiastic fans watch every cross-country skiing step and every shot of their idols on television, everyone in the scene knows the name of this quaint Pustertal side valley. Once the hustle and bustle of the championships is over, the silence descends over the white winter landscape and calm returns to the varied trails around the beautiful 44-hectare Lake of Antholz - one of the most beautiful mountain lakes in South Tyrol. During this time, the wintry Antholzertal turns back into a cozy retreat for gentle winter tourism, away from the well-known ski regions.
Even the summer attracts with its advantages, because in this time, tourists and locals go in search of the cool mountain air, the tranquility of the pastures and the originality of the peasant world. The steep slopes of the Rieserferner group are criss-crossed by numerous hiking trails; If you want, you can go up to one of the adventurous three-thousanders that frame the Antholzertal. In the valley floor, on the other hand, there are some raised bogs enriched by an amazing variety of flora and fauna - these places often provide shelter for rare animals and plants.
The Antholzertal extends over a length of 21 km: From Olang in the Pustertal over the pass Stallersattel, to the Austrian Defreggental. The entire valley corresponds at the same time to the municipality of Rasen-Antholz with its fractions Antholz Mittertal, Anterselva di Sotto, Anterselva Obertal, Neunhäusern, Niederrasen and Oberrasen. The largest part of the approximately 120 km2 large area consists of untouched, uninhabited mountain area, forests, mountain pastures and rugged peaks.
