Already centuries ago, world-famous travelers crossed the green valley. The Val Pusteria, which runs alongside the river Rienza and Drava in the middle of the Dolomites, was the territory of the Counts in the Middle Ages and a main road to Venice passing the Val di Landro and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
Between 1908 and 1910 Gustav Mahler composed his best-known symphony No. 9 and the "Song of the Earth" in Toblach, in the composing house in the zoo in Altschluderbach. The composer Gustav Mahler once wrote: "... it is wonderful here and will definitely repair body and soul". Dobbiaco symbolizes the place for music. All whole year are concerts of classical music, Strauss works on New Year's Eve, orchestral works for early music or traditional concerts performances with local, national and international artists and young musicians.
