Hotel Westend
Dear Guest,
to ensure that you really do feel at home at our Hotel, we would like to give a little more background information about the Westend.
The Hotel was, in fact, built as a private Villa in 1890 by the then-famous local architect Pietro Delugan to serve as his very own personal visiting - card - the perfect example of his art and skill and certainly with one of the most beautiful facades in all Merano at that time. The building is now justly recognised as a true jewel of the decorated Liberty stile and bas been under the protection of the Belle Arti, a national society for valuable historic buildings, since the year 1984.
The Villa pleasantly situated along the cool, shady river-side walk once known as the Stefanie-Promenade, was sold to the Pöder family in 1907 and they managed it as a guest house through the troubeld times of two World wars and the very unsettled period afterwards. A host of famous guests made holidays at the Westend including the German poet Gottfried Benn who wrote many letters and poems to friends and family during his stay.
The Strohmer family, long active in the hotel and catering business and already owners of the Hotel Europa Splendid, bought the Hotel 1983 and remodernised it completely with both taste and style. The Westend was awarded 3-star status in 1986.
The hotel has a delightful garden along the river and is still in quiet central position, away from the hustle and bustle of the town - the ideal place for a truly relaxing holiday. Our guest never fail to remark about the comfortable, cosy atmosphere the spacious airy rooms, the excelent home-cooking, the attnetive service and the warm welcome they always get from the owners and staff alike. We feel sure that you will enjoy your stay here at the Westend and look forward to seeing you soon.
