Kastelruth - Castelrotto

The village of Castelrotto has a mysterious charm: here myths and legends of witch dances and brave knights tell tales. 

The village of Castelrotto lies idyllically between the Eisack-, Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi with a view of the Dolomites. A destroyed castle ("Castellumruptum"), located in the north of the village and presumably built in pre-Christian times on a Kofel, where today an imposing tower towers into the sky, gave the settlement its name. Today, the manor Krausegg still shows the coat of arms of the Hungarian family von Kraus and reminds of the ruling family that ruled Castelrotto from the 16th to the 19th century. 

The witch trials were of particular importance for the village. Once, members of the aristocratic families whose coats of arms were lined up in the tower inn, sat in the judiciary and decided on crimes committed, some of which ended up on the gallows. The last execution of the judgement by means of skein and pyre goes back to the year 1778. Even today the Sciliar witches are still present in legends and legends. 

Not only the famous Oswald von Wolkenstein Ritt or the magical Christmas market, but also musical events provide fun and entertainment in Castelrotto all year round. Every year thousands of fans come to the Kastelruther Spatzenfest at the Alpe di Siusi to celebrate the band around Norbert Rier in their home village. The music group has enjoyed great success in the popular hit scene and is known far beyond national borders. 

The picturesque village of Castelrotto is a traditional village characterized by rustic farms on lush green meadows in front of the fascinating scenery of the Dolomites. Castelrotto is also a very skillful place due to the constant coming and going of numerous visitors from different nations. 

Easy to reach from Castelrotto, the Alpe di Siusi is an extremely popular holiday destination where you can recharge your batteries and enjoy the enchanting alpine scenery. Today, numerous ruins arouse the interest in mysterious legends that tell of long gone epochs and can still be found in customs today.
