Welcome to the Natz-Schabs apple plateau: colourful flower meadows, wooded hills and apple meadows await you here. The high-yielding harvests are celebrated every year in traditional festivals.
Between the rivers Eisack and Rienz, high above the Eisack Valley and the Puster Valley, a beautiful plateau with a characteristic heart shape stands out: the apple high plateau Natz-Schabs. Five small villages belong to this sunny community: Natz, Schabs, Raas, Viums and Aicha.
The rich and lush nature in the area attracts many hikers, walkers and cyclists who want to explore the wonderful natural landscapes of South Tyrol on the wonderful cycle paths of the Eisack Valley or on adventurous mountain bike routes. A must for all nature lovers is also the hamlet of Raas, which borders to the west and south on the valley basin of Brixen and the wine growing area of the Neustift monastery and is surrounded by pine forests. With its biotope Raier Moos, the village is part of a nature reserve and is a habitat for many protected plant, flower and animal species that form an incredible flora and fauna. Lovers of sacred art can visit the Church of St. Egidius - patron saint of viticulture - while in Milland the Church of Mary on the Sand, a well-known place of pilgrimage, is worth a visit.
Due to the mild and sunny climate, this region is characterized by green vineyards, orchards and lush meadows. Not only the landscape, but also the lifestyle of the inhabitants is shaped by nature and especially by agriculture. The harvest is the focus of numerous events here in all seasons. Known as the cultivation area of the apple varieties Golden Delicious and Jonathan, everything is dominated by this tasty fruit during the long awaited apple weeks in autumn. In the course of the celebrations, one girl from the community of Natz-Schabs is elected apple queen every year.
In autumn, during the Törggelen period, you can taste traditional South Tyrolean specialities such as blood sausage and "Nuien" in one of the numerous taverns. On the fertile soils of the Natz-Schabs plateau not only apples grow, but also the white grapes of the noble wines Müller-Thurgau, Sylvaner and the less known Verltiner and Rauländer. In winter you can practice numerous winter sports near the Natz-Schabs area at the Gitschberg-Jochtal, on the Plose, as well as in the nearby ski areas Rosskopf, Ratschings and Kronplatz. Not only breathtaking descents guarantee fun for the whole family. Here you can also go moonlight tobogganing, ice skating, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing.
