About the event
Aldo and Giuliana, mountain folk. Giuliana becomes an accountant by talent, whilst Aldo, a farmer and hunter, identifies with the animals, killing only what is necessary for the ecosystem. Married, their daily lives are shaken when a bear devours some of Aldo’s livestock. It is here that "The Bear’s Envy" takes shape: Aldo envies the animal’s strength, impulsiveness and freedom, its ability to sleep for months and then re-emerge.
Angela Demattè, originally from Trentino, wrote this play whilst observing the delicate relationship between Alpine communities and bears, whose population in Trentino has grown from ten specimens reintroduced in 1999 to around 120 today, sparking debate and controversy. On stage, a choir singing Alpine songs accompanies the protagonists, weaving together memory, tradition and solidarity: an invisible bond that reminds the two that, even in the most difficult moments, they are never alone.
By Angela Dematté.
Directed by Alice Sinigaglia.
Starring Giuliano Comin and Angela Dematté, with the Ana Piani Choir.
Produced by the Teatro Stabile di Bolzano.
