About one kilometre south of the Italian-Austrian border lies the village of Reschen am See on the northern shore of the well-known Reschensee.
Directly on the northern shore of Lake Reschensee, at an altitude of 1,500 m above sea level and about one kilometre south of the Reschenpass, you will find one of the four factions of the community of Graun in the Vinschgau: the village of Reschen am See.
The landscape around the Reschensee and in the Rojental valley is characterised by lush green meadows. In this region, agriculture, especially cattle breeding and dairy farming, is an extremely important economic pillar. The last bear of South Tyrol was shot here in the 19th century. For this reason the villagers are still called "bear shooters" today. It was not until 2005 that one of these predators roamed the country again.
Tourism also plays an important role in the town of Reschen am See. There are many opportunities to explore the surrounding villages in the area. For example, many cosy spots along the lakeside promenade at the Reschensee invite you to linger and relax. A church tower sticking out of the water makes this artificially constructed reservoir famous far beyond the borders. But it is not only at the famous Reschensee that you can admire the wonderful nature and enjoy the fresh air. A small hike, for example, leads to the three-country border crossing point at the border between Switzerland, Italy and Austria, while somewhat more demanding mountain tours lead to the 2,920 m high Klopair peak - a western foothill of the Ötztal Alps - or to the Piz Lad (2,809 m) at the Swiss border.
Many impressive bunkers around the village of Reschen am See still bear witness to the period after the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy after the First World War. Numerous artificial, fold-up rocks conceal large loopholes and fascinating underground facilities, which can also be visited today.
Also in winter the possibilities to have fun and admire the fantastic panorama are almost boundless. All around the Reschenpass there are the ski areas of the networked ski paradise Reschenpass. In the immediate vicinity between the Reschensee and the Rojental you will find the ski area Schöneben, while north of the Reschenpass you will find the ski paradise Nauders.
