Lake Resia - Reschensee

Rising from the waters of Lake Resia, the bell tower is a reminder of the dramatic events of 1950
The construction of a dam near Curon had been planned for years. The project was to create a reservoir for the generation of electricity. The whole of Curon and most of Resia paid the price. Houses, including the old hamlet of Curon were eliminated and submerged. A thousand years of history were erased almost instantly in 1950. Only the old church tower was preserved for posterity. Today the bell tower which rises from the waters of Lake Resia is a favourite subject for photographs because of its enchanting setting. Situated in the Venosta Valley Lake Resia extends over an area of 667 hectares and is 6 km long. The new villages of Curon and Resia are close by. The lake attracts a community of fishermen because its waters provide a home for dozens of fish species. The area surrounding the lake is buzzing with hikers, nordic walkers and joggers. The strong winds also make it ideal for sporting activities such as kitesurfing. And in winter it is popular for snow kiting, ice-skating, and ice gliding.
