About the Sarntal
Wide meadows and forests, picturesque hills, breathtaking mountain peaks and people whose lifestyle and character are as authentic as elsewhere hardly more: Welcome to the Sarntal!
The Sarntal - a place like a picture book. Quiet and far away from everyday stress, the traditional South Tyrolean valley lies in the midst of a fascinating scenery: Countless mountain peaks line up from the Sarner Schlucht to the Penser Joch pass and are accompanied by wide meadows and dense forests.
The inhabitants of the valley, the Sarner, are generally described as very quick-witted, humorous, down-to-earth and traditional. Therefore, tradition and customs take a high priority in everyday life of the valley dwellers: One of the oldest craftsmanship consists in the 200-year-old quill embroidery, which still finds its expression on the street parties today. While women decorate their costumes with colorful aprons and embroidered bodices, men dress in leather pants with a feather-quilted belt and the "Sarner Jangger", a cardigan made of raw wool. But other arts such as wood turning, weaving, basket weaving and pipe carving are also used here. The tradition-steeped traces can also be traced in the world of culinary delights: in keeping with an ancient recipe, the "Striezl", a Sarner yeast cake in the shape of a slipper, is baked and sold at the weekly markets.
Those looking for leisure activities will quickly find what they are looking for: The Sarntal is ideal for hikes with the whole family to natural treasures such as the impressive and popular Durnholzer Lake, cultural sights such as the St. Valentin church or legendary places like the Stoanerne Mandln. The latter tell of past times, of witches and their deeds and invite you to immerse yourself in the mystical atmosphere of the environment.
In winter, the Reinswald ski area awaits its many visitors, who indulge in pure snow fun on skis, snowboads, toboggans or snowshoes and admire the glorious white landscape of the winter paradise.
