Kohlerer Cable Car

A "steel cable lift" turned into a technical attraction. When, in 1888, Bolzano hotelier Josef Staffler bought the Uhlenhof guest house in Bauernkohlern, he was looking for ways to attract customers and services.
Privately financed by Josef Staffler, the Kohlerer railway started its operation on 29 June, 1908. In two accident-free years, it transported around 100,000 passengers. In 1910 stricter safety measures were introduced, and the business was forced to close. The railway was reopened in 1913, but over the next decades, the two World Wars made business very difficult until in 1943, an air raid brought the Kohlerer Bahn to a standstill. It was not until 1965 that regular passenger transport was resumed. In 2008, the railway celebrated its 100th year.
