Nature and relax

Between high mountains and river delta

South Tyrol is located on the southern side of the Alps and offers a mix between an Alpine and Mediterranean climate: ideal conditions for unique flora and fauna, and rich in species. Species living in the high mountains are e.g. chamois, Alpine ibex, eagles, groundhogs and mountain hare. In the marshlands on the Falschauer river delta near Lana, Postal or Gargazzone live over 200 types of birds and amphibians. The local flora is just as rich in species and includes among others birches, Alpine roses and mountain pines growing on pastures and elevated plains as well as palm trees, magnolia, olive and lemon trees down in the Adige Valley.

Lana and its surroundings offer numerous spectacles of nature: such as lonely mountain tops, lakes and waterfalls or wild ravines such the Gola Canyon or ancient larch trees that are several thousand years old.

Naturally cultural sites, monuments and works of art in the area also often pay homage to mother nature: for example the naturally beautiful and artistic maze garden in the 650 year old Kränzel Mansion in Tscherms, which represents an artistic synthesis between garden, winery and art house. Another excellent example are the splendid Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle, that once upon a time were the winter residence of the Austro-Hungarian empress Sissi, who was seeking recreation in the mild climate of Merano.
