St Magdalena church in Ridnaun

The St Magdalena church as it appears today was built in 1480-81 in Ridnaun-Gesse. This was during the heyday of mining at the Schneeberg, and the new church with its magnificent decor was meant to represent the splendour of the period. As early as 1273, the same picturesque spot on a hill in the remote part of Ridnaun valley, was occupied by a chapel. A weekly mass in a newly-built church following a fire in the old building was recorded in 1390. Finally, in 1480, St Magdalena church as we see it today was built.

The interior features no fewer than four late Gothic altars, including the high altar of Mattheis Stöberl dating from 1509.

From May until November, St Magdalena church can be viewed each Monday at 4.00p.m. when there is a guided tour, in July and August additionally each Friday at 10.30 a.m.
