St Valentin in Astfeld
St Valentin, a Romanesque church at the Gentersberg above Astfeld in the Sarn valley, dates back to the 12th or 13th century. The outside of the church is kept very simple and features a small wooden tower which is directly mounted onto the roof and accessible via a hillside staircase. The church is entered through an ashlar-framed arched door. Above, the depiction of a crucifixion group, and beside it a painting of St Valentin. The church interior is generally straight-lined, except for the fully painted round apse. The centre is dominated by a depiction of Jesus Christ in the mandorla, flanked by the evangelists. This work of art can be dated back to the 14th century. The painting style can be described as rough, but these are still astounding pieces for such a small and remote church.
