"Unsere liebe Frau im Moos"
Sterzing's parish church, "Unsere liebe Frau im Moos" ("Our Lady in the Moss"), lies somewhat off the beaten track, and unusually far away from the historic town centre. Its tower is quite small compared to the monumental building, but this can be attributed to the marshy soil the church was erected on. "Unsere liebe Frau im Moos" was built in the early 15th century. The architect was Hans Feur from Sterzing.
During excavation work, a Roman gravestone was found which can now be seen on the northern wall of the nave. But this is not the only piece of cultural or art-historical significance in the church.
The inside of the church is an imposing, three-nave hall, designed in the Gothic style but with baroque elements. Formerly, the famous, intricately carved Multscher altar was part of the interior, but this piece can now be seen at the municipal museum. However, 5 other Multscher shrine figures still remain on view in the church. The vault frescoes were crafted by the Viennese court and theatre painter, Joseph Adam Mölk.
