Directions

  • Start

    Passo Potzmauer

From the car park some 100 metres beyond the hamlet of Giovanni, follow the forest road to the Potzmauer pass. There, follow the signs for 'Cauria/Gfrill – Valdonega'. You enter a wood and follow a nice forest road. Near Bait del Gianneto, the road gets steeper and turns progressively into a nice path that takes you into the Upper Valdonega. After Baita del Zuccherin, carry on along the undulating European long-distance path E5, which, after becoming a forest road, takes you to the church and the last houses of the hamlet of Cauria/Gfrill (fountain). After these houses, descend along a tarmac road and then start climbing again towards Passo di Cauria. After a bend, ignore an uphill road, and continue instead up a slight incline towards Cauria/Gfrill. Where the road comes to an end, follow a downhill and technical track with a few steep sections that takes you back to the road to Passo di Cauria. Follow path No. 4 back to the last houses of the hamlet. Bear left and carry on along a forest road, first uphill (you can bypass a few hairpin bends by following a steep path), then downhill towards Grauno until you reach a crossroads. There, follow the signs for 'La Lot' and resume climbing. From Monte dell’Orso or thereabouts, a succession of undulating paths and small roads takes you back in Valdonega. When you reach a small pond, follow the signs for 'Laghetto di Vedes' and resume climbing. From the peatbog-like area of Laghetto di Vedes, a thrilling and at times technical descent will take you (after a short stretch on the forest road you followed on the way up) back to the Potzmauer Pass.
