Ahr river floodplains, Life by the water - Description

There are very few floodplains in South Tyrol. Visitors to the Ahr river will be treated to valuable insights into a largely ignored, water-rich environment with the opportunity to encounter special plants and animals.
Rightnext to the city of Brunico/Bruneck, head along the left bank through the Stegen and Jörgen Ahr river water meadows. This is a surprisingly unspoilt natural landscape set amidst an area otherwise reserved for agricultural use. The valley, through which the Ahr river snakes its way before flowing into the Rienz river, was formed by ice-age glaciers prior to being filled by rubble and sediment from the mountains. This is a natural oasis and one of the most unspoilt and beautiful river landscapes in South Tyrol with its very own diverse flora and fauna. Discover this and more during a simple walk. A viewing platform provides outstanding views and a fantastic observation point. With a bit of luck you might just catch a glimpse of the common kingfisher, whose beauty is only matched by its timidity.

Directions

  • Start

    Stegona/Stegen, Cemetery St. Nikolaus Church

The village of Stegona/Stegen directly borders Brunico/Bruneck, the main city of the Pustertal valley. Stegona is famed far and wide for its market which takes place every year at the end of October. This short walk begins at the cemetery of St. Nikolaus Church, at Brunico’s northern bypass. Head due north below the new Pfalzen bridge to the protected area in the Stegen Ahr river floodplains, a true gem for nature enthusiasts. Now it’s all about keeping your eyes peeled, as flora and fauna are often waiting with hidden surprises. Where the river bends, remain on the path and continue in an easterly direction until you come to the free-floating “Ahrblick” viewing platform that juts out over the second river bend. Return on the other of the two paths. Those with energy left in the tank can carry on walking to San Giorgio/St. Georgen and return to Brunico by bus.
