In the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park an extraordinary excursion on the Cavallazza
It is one of the itineraries that allows you to experience some of the most extraordinary natural landscapes of the Paneveggio Pale di San Martino Natural Park. It is a historical natural excursion, the Giro della Cavallazza, a panoramic mountain south-west of Passo Rolle where, like the whole front line of the Lagorai, of which it is part, battles were fought during the Great War. There are still many traces left at high altitude with trenches, walkways, fortifications, and tunnels. The view is extraordinary, overlooking the Pale di San Martino, Primiero Valley, Colbricon, and Paneveggio Forest.

    Malga Rolle

    The itinerary starts at the parking lot located at the Malga Rolle at about one kilometre from Passo Rolle. The excursion continues on a comfortable and semi-flat path (trail number 348 CAI) to the Colbricon lakes. From the lakes, take the marked path to Cavallazza, which immediately climbs steeply along the western ridge of the mountain until you reach the summit at 2324 meters. The effort of the climb is amply rewarded by the splendid panorama. You can admire the varied ridges of the Pale di San Martino, with Cimon della Pala in the foreground. But also the small Cavallazza Lake and the Pian della Cavallazza, a singular plateau characterized by red rocks. From the summit of the Cavallazza you go down steeply losing 100 meters of altitude and arriving at the Cavallazza Piccola pass, where there are remains of the military fortifications, to then return to the starting point.
