Colle Beo & San Lorenzo in Banale - Description

The village of S. Lorenzo encompasses seven boroughs called “Ville”: Glolo, Berghi, Pergnano, Senaso, Dolaso, Prato and Prusa.
Historically, the boroughs were separate, each one with its own unique character; today they have merged into one due to increasing housing developments. Each one of the seven “ville” retains its own church dedicated to Santo Patrono, the saint protector of the borough. Also part of this excursion, are the ruins of Castel Mani, an old manor destroyed during the XIX century, situated on Colle Beo rising above S. Lorenzo.

Directions

  • Start

    San Lorenzo in Banale

Park at San Lorenzo’s church square and head to the local supermarket, Famiglia Cooperativa Brenta Paganella to reach Strada Statate 421 dei Laghi di Molveno e Tenno; from here turn left onto a cobbled lane (200m) until you reach a shrine dedicated to the Madonna (Our Lady). Here, turn left again and continue towards the centre of Berghi: here, you will find “Casa Martinoni”, a beautiful example of rural house with a loggia, and a small church dedicated to S. Apollonia, dating XVII century. Continue ahead until you reach the “Poz’ area where you will see, on the right, a small stone fountain built on the front of a house. Continue for 100 metres towards the borough of Pergnano. At the next crossing, bear left and pass through “Località Dos”. The road continues up and down through the village; at the end, turn right and arrive at the church of Pergnano dedicated to S. Sebastiano and S. Rocco, dating XV century and decorated with frescos by the Baschenis. Take the road to the right leading uphill to the borough of Senaso with its small church of S. Matteo enclosed by walls. Continue along the cobbled road through the village, then turn right under I Ponti, a series of archways, near an old dairy, where, in the old days, the milk - prime source of income - was collected from each family in the borough to be processed; later, the dairy was used for smoking the local cured sausage “la ciuga”. As you turn right, make your way towards the borough of Dolaso, crossing the village and continuing along the road for Val Ambiez. At the first intersection, turn left and enter the road, bordered by hedges and crop fields, that descends quickly into the village of Dorsino. Cross the main road and enter the town centre where you find a beautiful fountain and the ancient church of S. Giorgio’s, dating between XV and XVI century. From the church square, take the lane on the left leading through “pont de l’era”, a series of archways, heading towards San Lorenzo. After walking up a street lined with hazelnut trees, as you reach the first houses of San Lorenzo, turn left onto a dirt track bordered with edges to reach the main paved road. Continue along this road, keeping to right-hand side, pass few hotels and, still keeping to the right, enter the historic centre to start the climb of Colle Beo. Soon after the first bend, near a picnic area, a path leads through the trees to the ruins of Castel Mani overlooking the valley of Rio Bondai. The paved road continues, passing a hotel and a group of houses where it turns into a dirt track leading to the top of the hill. Here, you will find a rest area with benches where you can admire the spectacular views over the town and across the surrounding mountains. Later, descend the other side of the hill, along a steady path leading to Località Manton, just above Berghi, from where you can reach the square of San Lorenzo where you initially parked.
