DBT Stage 2: Bivacco Costanzi - Rifugio Graffer - Description

Second stage of the "Dolomiti di Brenta Trek" route, from Bivacco Costanzi to Rifugio Graffer.
From the Costanzi Bivouac heading towards the untamed Val del Vento you reach the ruins of Malga Scale. Then, continuing up and down through Val Centonia you get to Malga Mondifrà. From the malga, after leaving the large meadow, you go into the woods and easily ascend the Val Gelada ridge to the left until you first get to Malga Vaglianella, then following the forest path, the Vagliana malga.  Leaving the green of the malgas and meadows behind you, continue along the rather steep path until you reach the Graffer refuge.  From the refuge you can admire the jagged peaks and scree slopes of the Pietra Grande and Grostè Peaks.

Directions

  • Start

    Bivacco Costanzi

From the bivouac the DBT Expert  climbs shortly in 15 minutes along the path SAT 365 (EE) to connect to the path SAT 329 (EE) that descends the steep Val del Vento and in 1:45 hours it reaches the remains of ex Malga Scale (1590 m).
You follow now the waymark SAT 335 (T) that in ups and downs crosses Val Centonia and leads to the forestry road that takes you to Malga Mondifrà (1632 m) where you can stop for some great food and homemade cheese. Walking time Malga Scale – Malga Mondifrà: 2:00 hours.
From Malga Mondifrà you follow the DBT Expert signs that in 30 minutes lead you to Malga Vaglianella (1826 m) first and in 30 more minutes to Malga Vagliana (1974 m) then. The route now becomes steeper and climbs up to 2180 m. Here the landscape changes dramatically: the green colour of the pastures lets the typical light grey of the Dolomia rock have its seat. You are now surrounded by the peaks of Pietra Grande and Grostè.  Leaving the green pastures behind you reach now Rifugio Graffer (2261 m) in 1:30 hours. Walking time Malga Mondifrà – Passo del Grostè: 2:30 hours.
