Jacopeo d'Anaunia Path - I stage - Description
Overall, this beautiful stage is quite challenging both for its length and for the altitude gain, but it does not have very steep climbs except for the short one that leads from the gorge of San Romedio to Salter. The average walking time, excluding breaks, is around 7-8 hours, depending on physical condition and walking speed.

Start
Sanzeno, Basilica dei SS. Martiri
The first stage of the walk starts from the Basilica of the Holy Martyrs of Sanzeno, the main place for Christianity in our valley, and ends in Senale, at the Sanctuary of Our Lady in the Woods (Unsere Libe Frau im Walde).
Leaving the Basilica (630 m), go up to the Rhaetian Museum and take the walkway on the rocky wall directed to the Sanctuary of San Romedio. A few hundred metres before the Sanctuary, take the climb that leads to Salter and then, taking the new cycle track route, you will reach the San Bartolomeo farmstead in Romeno (progressive 7.6 km, 906 m above sea level). Continuing on a little you will reach the church of S. Antonio in Romeno, where there is a precious cycle of frescoes on the external walls, dedicated to the most famous miracle attributed to St. James of Compostela, commonly known as the legend of the hanged.
Continuing and crossing beautiful meadows we arrive at Fondo (progressive 15.1 km altitude 985 m) and here we can admire various Jacope-themed frescoes (mainly depicting St. James of Compostela), if time permits we can visit the ancient church of Santa Lucia.
Continuing on we arrive in Tret and shortly after we enter the Nonsberg meeting San Felice (progressive 22.3 km altitude 1263 m). The signs in German indicate that the end of the walk is not far away. Before the last climb we can admire the church of San Cristoforo and then we arrive at Madonna di Senale (progressive 25.6 km altitude 1350 m). The 16th century sanctuary was built on the site of an ancient Romanesque church. In this place has been documented the presence of an ancient hospice for pilgrims since 1184.

required equipment
Anyone who sets out and wants to get to their destination without problems must wear a good pair of comfortable shoes, preferably with a sculpted sole (like Vibram) and ankle protection (like hiking pedules), but in which the foot is firmly fixed to prevent the formation of blisters or, worse still, risk a sprain. It is also good to have a stick (or better still, telescopic sticks) to help you along the way, especially in some more challenging passages.
Tips for the tour
It is advisable to divide this first stage in two, taking into account the length, the altitude gain and above all the wealth of historical and cultural heritage. Before embarking on the Jacopeo Path, ask for the Pilgrim's Credential. It will be sent free of charge directly to your home address! To request it, write to the Azienda per Il Turismo Val di Non: info@visitvaldinon.it The stamp to be affixed on the Pilgrim's Credential is located at: Sanzeno - Church of Santi Martiri Romeno - Church of San Bartolomeo Romeno - Church of Sant'Antonio Abate, near the Cemetery Cavareno - Church of SS. Fabiano and Sebastiano Fondo - San Martino parish church
