Lez "Sentiero Margherita" between Terres and Cunevo - Description

Another pleasant gentle path overlooking Val di Non following the tracks of an ancient irrigation channel.
The Margherita path weaves gently along the path of the irrigation channel, the “Lez”, built over 160 years ago to irrigate the land in Terres, Flavon and Cunevo to make use of the water from the Tresenica stream in Val di Tovel. The path then enters into the pleasant pine forest above the villages in Contà and can be easily identified as the track of the old aqueduct is always clear, where it is still possible to see the water flowing. Along the path there are equipped areas where you can stop for a break and you may catch a glimpse of roe deer in the woods. Anyone walking with children will be pleased to know that at the end of the trail, slightly above the irrigation basin of Terres, there is a lovely play area entirely made of wood in the cool shade of the pine forest. There is also a cooking spot and a large table.

Directions

  • Start

    Cunevo

From Cunevo you can take the asphalt road which climbs up from the village towards Malga Arza. At the mouth of the Margherita path there is a widening for parking your car and a large wooden board showing an aerial map of the trail and the history of the old “Lez”, the ancient irrigation channel that brought the precious water of the Tresenica river from Val di Tovel to the villages in Contà as far as Cunevo. From the board you can start the clear trail on the right and soon find yourself in the pleasant pine forest where you notice the nice smooth base of the track. If you keep on walking you get a glimpse of the course of the irrigation channel. The channel is mainly covered by slabs but in some points the water flows in the sunlight and pleasantly accompanies the walk. The constant presence of the channel makes orientation easy as it is sufficient to follow its track and the small signs to easily get to the large irrigation basin of Terres. In the pine forest just above the basin of Terres there is a large play area and a cooking spot with large wooden tables, an ideal place for a break before heading back to Cunevo following the same route as on the way there.

Tips for the tour

Anyone wanting to extend the trail can continue beyond the irrigation basin of Terres and take the tunnel which after 2.5 km leads to Val di Tovel. The tunnel is open from 1 May to 31 October but bear in mind that the temperature inside is 10 degrees all year round, even in summer! There are no eating places along the trail so it is best to bring everything you need for a picnic in one of the equipped areas.
