Mendel and Gampen pass tour - Description

This racing bike tour is the classic of the biking region. The passes on the border between South Tyrol and Trentino are as fascinating as the Dolomite passes. Especially since from the Mendel Pass you not only have a unique view directly into the Dolomites, but also overlook the entire Adige Valley, from the north over Merano and the Texel Group, over Bolzano, to the southern Adige Valley.
The circuit is best suited for racing bikes, as it is ridden on public roads. The e-bikes will probably run out of juice halfway along the route, so they are only recommended if there is a loading possibility. Start is in Appiano and after a short stretch on the cycle path turn right onto the main road to the Mendel Pass. The route leads at the beginning through the forest, later through the rock face of the steeply sloping formation. At the Mendola Pass a break is obligatory, not only for the view, but also because of the special flair that the old buildings from the time of Emperor Franz Josef exude, between today's hectic hustle and bustle of motorbike noise and the hustle and bustle around the souvenir stalls. At the pass South Tyrol is left and thus the German-speaking area and further downhill to Fondo in the Italian-speaking Trentino. From Fondo the road climbs again and in partly easy and partly a little steeper climbs to the Gampen Pass. From there it goes downhill to Lana, just before Meran. On the cycle path along the Adige, or on the small roads through the apple orchards, you return to Appiano.
