Sentiero attrezzato Nico Gusella and Ferrata del Velo - Description

From Passo di Ball to Rifugio Velo della Madonna
With this itinerary it is possible to reache the Rifugio Velo della Madonna; a short detour leads to the Cima Val di Roda, with a spectacular view of the valley

Directions

  • Start

    Lift station Funivia Rosetta

Access to the ferrata: from the station above the cable car up to the Rifugio Rosetta (2581 m), walk downhill and continue the descent following first path no. 702 and then, path no. 715, Via Alta delle Dolomiti, as far as the Passo di Ball (2443 m). At the Pass, follow the signpost 714, Sentiero
attrezzato N. Gusella, Forcella di Stephen.
Information about the route: from Passo di Ball on the Gusella ferrata (easy to medium difficulty) up to Passo Stephen (2650 m). From here in about 20 minutes, you can reach the top of the Cima di Val Roda (2791 m) or descend immediately towards Forcella del Porton (only partially equipped, so take care on the climbing sections which are not secure!) The Rifugio Velo and the ferrata of the same name soon come into sight. Under the Forcella del Porton (access to and exit from the Ferrata del Porton), continue onwards crossing over southwards towards the start of the Ferrata del Velo which you go past on the way down (new cables and plenty of metal rungs). Characteristics and technical details: Neither of the ferrata are particularly long or difficult. The long walking sections between the two ferratas, however, require you to be sure-footed and physically fit.
Take care especially on the descent from Passo Stephen. Do not underestimate the return route from the Rifugio Velo della Madonna either.
Variation: At the Passo di Ball, descend eastwards towards Rifugio Pradidali and via the Ferrata del Porton (difficult) on towards the Ferrata del Velo; or with a different access point from the departure point Rifugio Cant del Gal in Val Canali on to Rifugio Pradidali, then go back up to Ferrata del Porton or the Sentiero Gusela via the Ferrata Velo up to Rifugio Velo. Descent along the Sentiero Camillo
Depaoli (no. 734-731), partially equipped, as far as Prati Fosne and back to Cant del Gal (approx. 9 hours). Alternatively, from Rifugio Velo della Madonna, you can follow the Ferrata Buzzati to return to Val Canali (very long, approx. 10 hours in all).
Descent: from Rifugio della Madonna back to San Martino
    (route no. 721).
