Snowshoe trek to Cima del Lago - Description

This short and easy excursion winds its way along the right bank of the Venegia valley, in the presence of the Pale di San Martino Dolomites, and offers a truly spectacular panorama.
The Val Venegia is rightly known as one of the most beautiful valleys in the Dolomites. This pleasant and sunny trek allows you to truly appreciate its charm as you make your way from the valley floor up to the crest that joins Valles Pass to Monte Mulaz, along open gently sloping terrain. The summit of Cima del Lago is also known as Cima Caladora.

Directions

  • Start

    Pian dei Casoni (1,675 m a.s.l.)

From the car park at the mouth of the Val Venegia (in the Pian dei Casoni locality), you follow the road as far as the Malga Venegia farmhouse. From here you start climbing up the slope behind the farmhouse, crossing a narrow valley in an easterly direction and continuing upwards through the woods (there’s no marked trail along this stretch). The trees will slowly thin out as you climb and be substituted by the open slopes that lead you directly to the summit.

  • end point

    Cima del Lago (2,310 m a.s.l.)

required equipment

For all snowshoe treks, suitable apparel is strongly recommended. Temperatures can dip quickly and so garments should be warm and also be suitable for snowy conditions (such as waterproof Gore-Tex jackets). Furthermore, every group member should pack gloves, a cap, sun glasses and sun cream. It’s also important to bear in mind that tight-fitting or insufficiently waterproof footwear can lead to frostbite. We also strongly recommend that all members of the group pack an avalanche rescue kit consisting of avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel (this is also available for rent). Ski poles can also come in quite useful and are therefore recommended.

Tips for the tour

The Malga Venegia farmhouse offers food and refreshments even on winter weekends.
