Grill
From the hamlet of Grill, head north to Dos de la Mot up a small tarmac road. After about 250 m, turn left onto a dirt road that heads for an ancient stone building standing in a sunny spot: this is 'Mas de la Purga', an ancient farm building which used to belong to the owners of the nearby Castle Belvedere – 'Purga' being a pronunciation diverging from the original one (i.e. 'Burg') of the German word for 'castle'. Head for the top of the hill along small roads and mule paths across a wood of alders, hazels, birches, spruces, and pines. At the summit you can still see the ruins of Castle Mot, one of the most ancient and mysterious castles of the region. The history of this fortress has become lost in the mists of time: long before 1160 (i.e. the date on its earliest written record) the castle used to be a fief of the Prince-Bishop of Trento. This fief probably reached its apogee under Jacopino III, known as 'Frisone', who gained the favour of the Prince-Bishop of Trento on account of services he rendered in defensive battles against the Veronese. Legend has it that around 1280, anger at the constant abuse perpetrated by Jacopino triggered a popular uprising during which the lord of the manor himself was killed and his castle was razed to the ground. It's worth completing the walk around Dos de la Mot by following the mainly level route which takes you back to Mas de la Purga. If you'd rather not go back the way you came, here's an alternative route: head downhill for Ronchi along a small road (archery path). From there, it's only a short walk to Vigo and then Baselga. -

required equipment
Even on relatively short easy outings make sure to take all you need so you don't run into trouble if things take an unexpected turn, for example a storm blows up or you have a sudden drop in energy levels. What you should have in your rucksack: water canteen (1L) snacks (e.g. mixed dried fruit or chocolate) First aid kit windproof jacket fleece change of t-shirt and socks (in a plastic bag) make sure to wear or at least bring a pair of long trousers hat sun screen sunglasses gloves whistle to attract attention in an emergency emergency telephone number Mountain Rescue 112 Make sure you're wearing the right footwear for the trail and season. The going can get rough and rocky underfoot and a pair of hiking boots will protect you from sprains. And finally... don't forget to bring your camera! You'll need it to capture the stunning views.
