Trek ring to Monte Cimone - Description

Hike to Mount Cimone amidst fresh woods and beautiful views of the Valsugana and Lake Caldonazzo
This unusual route climbs Monte Cimone from the northern slope and travels through an untamed, rarely-beaten environment. The first leg that alternates forest roads and trails is followed by a beautiful diagonal trail (Panoramic Trek – Sentiero della Pace) using an old military mule track, restored with reinforcements and the construction of magnificent suspension bridges. From this central point you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the basin of Caldonazzo with its deep blue lake: here the profiles of the Dolomiti di Brenta Group and of Carè Alto outline the horizon in an enchanting way. The top of the peak is reached by proceeding along the steep final part (trail No. 222), completely submerged in the forest. The peak is covered with very thick vegetation and the beautiful summit cross seems to be of inappropriate size compared to the tall trees adorning the top. You can trace your steps back to the departure point or follow SAT route No. 225 (Sentiero dei Piani) which descends directly to the northern slope. This option makes it possible to complete a beautiful trek ring.

Directions

  • Start

    Caldonazzo (500 m)

Go across the road opposite to the car park (Dossi) and enter the trail with the indications SAT 225 “Monte Cimone – Sentiero dei Piani”.
The trail skirts an apple grove to the left of the lot. At the end of the field is the start of the trail that enters the thick forest. Follow the trail which is well-marked and climbs directly into the vegetation. Cross over a narrow path and continue straight upwards.
At an altitude of 643 m the trail leads onto a forest road. Go uphill towards the left. Go past a crossroads on the right and continue following the SAT signs in the direction of “Monte Cimone”.
At an altitude of 705 m leave the forest road and take the trail in the forest (sign No. 225). This trail lets you cut across the forest road (which you will cross again at an altitude of 729 m) and climb up the mount directly and more quickly.
At an altitude of 922 m the trail re-connects with the mule track, which is a continuation of the forest road which we followed only partially at a lower altitude. Follow the charming mule track which now goes uphill towards the right (westwards).
Thus you reach 957 m where to the left you can see the track of trail No. 225 “Sentiero dei Piani” which branches off from the trail and leads directly up to Monte Cimone. Rather than taking this trail, we advise you to continue along the mule track (Sentiero della Pace) which is a longer but certainly more picturesque route.
This way you cross the mountain on a trail featuring fabulous panoramic points (Polsa del Vescovo) that has been restored with masonry works and suspension bridges, recreating the original track of the First World War.
This is an extraordinarily panoramic area with magnificent views of Lake Caldonazzo, of the Brenta Dolomites and Carè Alto ranges which you can see clearly on the horizon.
On this quite long crossing you gain altitude slowly. Go past the crossroads where the trail goes downhill to the right in the direction of “Col de le Albarele” (Sentiero del Tamazol).
Here the trail connects with trail No. 222 without changing direction and proceeds uphill to an altitude of 1244 m . Now follow the SAT signs for trail No. 222 in the direction of Monte Cimone.
Here the terrain is quite steep. In the forest the trail is not always clearly visible, so you must follow carefully the red and white marks on the plants even though some of them have faded and are hard to see.

You will now reach a narrow firewall road. Follow it to the right (Monte Cimone sign) for about 300 m. Be careful to take trail No. 222 (Monte Cimone sign) where the trail widens. Said trail goes sharply uphill into the forest all the way up to the top of Monte Cimone at an altitude of 1525 m .
You can go back down by tracing your steps or by following SAT trail No. 225 “Sentiero dei Piani” which runs directly across the northern slope. This option makes it possible to complete a lovely trek ring.
