Valsugana Bike paths - Description

Also called “La via del Brenta”, this is one of the most beautiful and top cycling paths in Europe.
It is a 52 km cycling/hiking path of Valsugana up to the border with the province of Vicenza. There are long sections where the track follows the Brenta river. There are no particular difficulties in terms of altitude, and it is suitable for cyclists of all skill levels. About half the route follows secondary roads that are open to traffic, but where you are unlikely to encounter motorised vehicles.

Directions

  • Start

    Calceranica

The cycling path starts in Pergine, and heads towards Lake Caldonazzo among cultivated fields and fruit orchards. It gently brushes past the lake, so you can see your reflection in the calm waters. In addition to fishing, here you can also swim, sail, windsurf, or go water skiing or canoeing.
There are several furnished beach areas and free beaches. The summer season is the best time to go for a refreshing swim before continuing your cycle tour. In just a few minutes, you reach Levico Terme, a location renowned for its spas. Here, you will find the first Bicigrill. The track then enters the Brenta river cycle touring route, continuing north towards Novaledo, where you will find the second Bicigrill.
The track then leads to Roncegno and Borgo Valsugana, crossing through the centre of the town. In Catelnuovo, you come to the third Bicigrill, an ideal spot to stop and catch your breath. On the bike again, you reach Tezze di Grigno, where you will find the last Bicigrill, confirming the quality of the service provided.
After crossing the Brenta in Martincelli, a section on a cycling trail leads to the border with the Veneto region.
This historical route towards the plains and Venice, once travelled by Roman soldiers, also leads to ancient castles: the one in Pergine, Corte Trapp in Caldonazzo, Tor Quadra in Novaledo, and Torre Tonda in Marter, Castel Telvana in Borgo Valsugana, and Castel Ivano in Ivano - Fracena, an authentic gem, entirely refurbished.
The railway stations along the Trento-Venice line are spread out throughout the route, just a few kilometres from one another, and they represent a tempting opportunity to comfortably return to the starting point or to start from whichever town you choose: on many trains, in fact, you will find a bicycle transport service.
