About the Val Gardena

Val Gardena is popular with winter sports enthusiasts, hikers and nature lovers due to the numerous Dolomite peaks and the enchanting alpine landscapes, while mountain bikers prefer the numerous adventurous trails.

"Benunì te Gherdeina!", this is how the guests are greeted in Val Gardena. The traces of 2000 years of history are still present in the valley today. Together with the Gader and Fassa valleys, Buchenstein (Fodom) and Cortina d' Ampezzo (Anpezo), today it is part of the retreat of the Ladin language, which sounds ancient and archaic.

From Waidbruck, the 25-kilometre-long side valley of the Isarco Valley leads in an eastern direction to the Val Gardena and Sella Passes at the foot of the monumental Sellastock. At the same time, a road squeezes itself in tight bends through the canyon of the Val Gardena brook. Later the valley widens and dense coniferous forests spread like a green carpet over the slopes. The impressive craggy peaks of the "Bleaching Mountains", as the Dolomites are also called, rise up all around.

In Val Gardena the most important economic sector is tourism. Today, this once secluded and inaccessible high valley is extremely popular with active holidaymakers, sportsmen and nature lovers in summer and winter alike and is the starting point for wonderful walks, leisurely hikes, more demanding alpine tours, adventurous climbing routes and fun ski days on the pistes.

Wood carving is also very important in Val Gardena. Besides tourism, this is an important main economic sector. Gardena's woodcarving is based on a long tradition; what once served as a sideline is nowadays an internationally renowned craft. Today, particularly valuable works can be seen in the Museum of Local History near Ortisei. A permanent exhibition is also dedicated to the famous Val Gardena mountaineer, architect and director Luis Trenker.
