Sightseeing in Merano

Between rich history, picturesque promenades, exotic plants, medieval arcades, historic buildings of the Belle Époque: Welcome to Merano - A city in which alpine and Mediterranean flair unite into a dreamlike and unique atmosphere.

Let yourself be seduced by the extensive parks, the flowering and romantic promenades as well as by the rushing waters to explore the second largest city in South Tyrol in its smallest details and to go on a journey through time - back to the 12th century. The time of the Habsburg monarchy helped her to gain her reputation as the most famous spa town in the entire Alpine region, because the mild, Mediterranean climate invited many patients with lung diseases to a relaxing spa stay. Among them, Richard Strauss, Rainer Maria Rilke, Franz Kafka and the Empress Sissi found their way into today's Burggrafenamt.

A walk through the historic old town will take you through the Meraner Lauben - with a length of 400 meters they are the longest arcades in Tyrol and South Tyrol. Among the winding, medieval vaults are now numerous restaurants and shops that invite you to stroll comfortably. Through the Bozner Tor, a leftover part of the old city wall at the end of the Pfarrplatz, you reach the south side of the Meran Stadttheater and the Kurhaus. Here is the most traditional of all the promenades of the city: The delightful spa promenade invites numerous seating options to stay along the Passer.

From here you can experience exciting walks along the sunny winter promenade, which leads you to delightful Art Nouveau buildings and the Gilfschlucht over to the romantic Gilf promenade to the Zenoburg and the Powder Tower. If you want to take a nice but shady walk on warm summer days, you can enjoy the sequoias, pines, poplars and Lebanon cedars of the cool summer promenade. At the beginning there is also a monument to the Empress Elisabeth, which also marks the end of the "Sissi Trail" that leads to the botanical garden of Trauttmansdorff Castle.

In addition to extensive sports and recreational activities such as canoeing, climbing, swimming, cycling and horseback riding, the city also has a lot to offer culturally: in addition to numerous events, fairs, concerts and open-air events, all year round attractions such as castles, Churches, castles and museums to present you their treasures.
