Maria Himmelfahrt - Schlanders
The church tower of Schlanders is highly visible: pointed, slender and red in colour. Its top slightly leans towards the west. It appears to be battling the fierce winds which tend to come from that direction.
With its 97 metres the tower of Maria Himmelfahrt parish church is the highest of the entire Tyrolean region and a true landmark of Schlanders.
Maria Himmelfahrt parish church was destroyed by fire in 1499, then rebuilt in neo-Gothic style. The vault inside the building has a sequence of frescoes depicting the life of Mary. Around 1900, the church was renovated in the Art Nouveau style.
