The ancient larches of the Val d'Ultimo
At Santa Gertrude in the Val d'Ultimo there is a special natural monument: the 3 thousand-year old larches. These are the oldest conifers in Europe. There are different opinions on the ages of these ancient larches but they are more than 1,000 years old.
The trees, which are more than 35 m high, bear the marks of wind storms and adverse weather conditions. There used to be 4 but one tree was struck by lightning in 1930, after which it was possible to count the rings (more than 2000). More information about this natural monument can be found in the information table.
