About Merano

Find out here why Merano is an attractive holiday destination, which on the one hand enjoys its reputation as a health resort and on the other hand offers many sights worth seeing due to its exciting history.

Merano is the second-largest city in South Tyrol. Its population and culture are characterized by a charming mix of Germans and Italians. Due to its mild climate and a visit to the Merano Thermal Baths, where you can enjoy the healing thermal waters to the full, Merano is considered a beneficial holiday destination.

The history of Merano dates back to Roman times. The first written record of the existence of today's South Tyrolean town can be traced back to the year 857. At that time, however, the city was still called Mairania. In history, Merano can call itself the capital of Tyrol for a few years. However, after Prince Friedrich IV moved to Innsbruck, Merano lost its importance and poverty spread among the population.

Merano celebrates its comeback since the city establishes itself as an important health resort - for the first time when Princess Schwarzenberg visits Merano for spa purposes. One of the most famous spa guests remains to this day the Empress Sissi of Austria, who is remembered among other things by the Sissi Monument. Thanks to its status as a city for spa, Merano won over the tourist trade and is now a popular holiday destination.

By the way, South Tyrol has only belonged to Italy since the end of the First World War. With so much history, there is a lot to see in South Tyrol's second-largest city. For example, the parish church of St. Nicholas, whose construction dates back to the early years of the 14th century. If you would like to find out more about these and other sights, you can read on here.

A relaxed holiday is favored by Merano's traffic-restricted zones. The flow of traffic in Meran's old town was already limited in 1976. Speaking of Meran's old town... there you will find the medieval Laubengasse, which invites you to go shopping and to see a lot of interesting sights.
